I play solo roughly half of the time, and while it is doable, being in a party can be an immense help, especially when taking on harder dungeons! I play as a sorceress myself, and I mostly use my party to pull the monster while I'm preparing a fireball for example. There might be areas where one is required to be in a party though, I haven't seen them yet, but I'm only level 30 at the moment. Fortunately, not knowing anyone in-game isn't any problem, when you walk around in the first village (Calderock Village), you are sent random guild invites by random people.

I refused all of them, but they could help:) So, in short, you can play the game on your own, as far as I know you can finish the game solo, but some of the side quests might not be able to do by yourself. In those cases finding help shouln't be too hard.
